Keratosis pilaris (also known as follicular keratosis or “chicken skin”) is a common cosmetic skin condition that affects 50% of adults and 80% of adolescents, both male and female. KP is often quite noticeable – numerous small, rough, red bumps cover the upper arms, legs, buttocks, and sometimes cheeks. While the bumps are usually not painful or itchy, picking at them can cause bleeding and scarring.
Q: What causes KP?
A: Keratosis pilaris is a hereditary condition. KP is caused when the body produces too much keratin, a natural protein found in the skin. This excess keratin builds up and clogs the hair follicles and pores, forming white, hard plugs and causing the skin to become red and irritated. Back to Top
Q: How does KP Elements work to treat KP?
A: KP Elements Exfoliating Skin Cream contains several ingredients specifically designed to soothe your skin and treat keratosis pilaris. Alpha-hydroxy acids go to work to break down the excess keratin in the pores, while essential oils and vitamins C and E moisturize and tone. Our Body Scrub uses a combination of physical exfoliation to remove excess keratin, along with soothing aloe vera to relieve redness. Back to Top
Q: How long will it take to see some improvement?
A: Typically you can start to see smoother skin in as little as a week, though some people with particularly severe KP can take several weeks to see improvement. Once the bumps are cleared up it can take another several weeks for your skin to heal and redness to decrease – treatment of KP is a healing process, so be patient! Back to Top
Q: Is it possible to cure KP?
A: Unfortunately there is currently no way to cure KP permanently, but the condition can be easily and effectively managed indefinitely with KP Elements. Back to Top
Q: How long will a jar of KP Elements last me?
A: Depending on how much skin area your KP covers, you may need more or less cream each day. Typically, one 4oz jar of KP Elements Exfoliating Skin Cream will last about 3-4 weeks, which is plenty of time to see an improvement in your skin. Back to Top
Q: Does KP Elements require a prescription?
A: No, KP Elements is available “over-the-counter” without a prescription, and many dermatologists actually recommend alpha-hydroxy moisturizing lotions like KP Elements instead of prescription lotions that are much more expensive and don’t always work as well. Back to Top
